Chapter 5 notes – Its News Release Time

For those of you that don’t have an over abundance of free time in your life, I have taken the liberty to provide four tips from each chapter from Dennis  Wilcox’s book, Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques

Chapter 5

If you’r anything like me you get frustrated very easily when messing with feature stories.  Stick with me with these four easy, basic and to-the-point bullets and you will be put at ease.

1.Not to burst your bubble or anything but “…between 55 and 97 percent of all news releases sent to media outlets are never used.”  Now you can look at that in one of two ways.  I would say, “Great, that means that my news release will probably not be used.”  Which is not the attitude you should have if you a journalism major.  You should take that and just be aware of rejection.  The texts tell me that media outlets get sent 300-500 news releases a week.

2. Five different types of new releases

  1. Announcements
  2. Spot Announcements
  3. Reaction Releases
  4. Bad News
  5. Local News

3. A news release is ridiculously important when it comes to an announcement made by a company.
