Social Media News Release

Social media news releases – “a press release format designed for the online media world. The press release was written with just the “press” in mind, but in the online world your story needs to be told in a format that is relevant to a wide variety of people – journalists, bloggers, publishers and the public at large.” (realwire)  I believe that in all cases, we should be writing social media news releases.  They are the way that information is getting across the web in a timely manor.  With all the new social networking sites taking over, it is important that when writing a press release, it is written to everyone because everyone will see it.

Tips:

Keep it simple and too the point.

Provide a page of qoutes from CEOs

Provide it in many different formats

Provide links within the post to other sources

Keep it straight forward

There are many advantages to writing a social media news release.  For example, because it it aimed at everyone, more people will get more out of it, rather than just if someone were to write a normal news release.  It provides an avenue to more creativity. “Like all press releases it is the content of your story that is key and ensuring it is told to the right people, however our coverage analysis suggests that the use of the format can assist in achieving around double the editorial coverage and up to four times as much on blogs. We think this is because it encourages clients to strive for greater creativity in their storytelling. You can find our blog post about the analysis here and reactions on Twitter here.”  (realwire).   Social media is also better because it is a lot more engaging than a normal news release.  Although there are many positives to writing a social media news release, there are a couple things that are negative.  For example, because it is not directed at one target audience, it has to be more broad thus making it not very detailed.

A pr practitioner should be careful when writing social media releases for they are very easy to mess up.  For example, you should avoid being to singularly focused, like on the company.  Also, when they do not have a specific target in mind. (copybloger)

Here is a great example of a social media news release, Shift.  It provides what a news release really needs to look like in order to be effective.
